Wondering whether you can remove the bobbin in a conventional sewing machine? Or whether it’s worth removing or not? Well, don’t worry.

Let me clear all your doubts regarding bobbin in this blog.

A bobbin is actually a small cylindrical device in your sewing machine that holds the lower thread. Bobbin holds the lower thread whereas the spool in your machine is responsible for the upper thread, they both work together to create a stitch.

Earlier, this part was present in all conventional sewing machines but with time, many sewing machines are designed without it.  However, for the majority of conventional sewing machines, removing the bobbin entirely is not possible.

So, after reading that If you are wondering if Sewing Without a Bobbin Is even Possible? then let me answer,

Absolutely! In this blog, you will get everything you need to know.

Now let’s begin!

1. Specialized Sewing Machines

When I started my sewing journey, there was nothing much but today, with the advancement of technology, many sewing machines are  designed to function without bobbins.

So, if you are looking for a sewing machine that doesn’t require a bobbin then you can always go for a specialized sewing machine.

2. Sewing Without a Bobbin: The Manual Method

Now, I’ll explain how individuals with conventional sewing machines can sew without a bobbin. The method I’ll be telling you about is known as a manual approach.

However, it is not recommended for all types of sewing, that is something you have to keep in mind.

Here’s how:

First of all, you need to remove the top cover of your sewing machine carefully. This cover typically contains things such as the bobbin case, foot pedal, and guide bar.

Now, open machine and remove the bobbins. This step is important to prevent tangling between the bobbins and the needle, that’s why they are made  properly.

Once you’re done with the above just thread the needle through the eyelet. It is near the bobbin case.  Aright, after that pass the needle back to the hole where the bobbin was.

Now, just insert the needle into the fabric of your choice and start stitching. You need to repeat this entire process until your fabric piece has been sewn together.

3. Sewing Without a Bobbin: The Automatic Method

Apart from the manual method that I’ve explained to you, there is another method you can try;  the Automatic method, my personal favorite. This method is more easy to use. Here’s how you can use it:

First of all, you need to attach the presser foot onto the fabric and turn on the power switch.  After that, open the bobbin compartment of the door and choose the desired bobbin style.

then comes the main part, Insert the bobbin into the bobbin holder. After that, activate the machine using the electronic button and start to sew.

 6. How Long Does It Take to Sew Without a Bobbin?

Let me tell you what I’ve observed in my sewing experience. The time actually depends on your sewing skills. On an average, it can take 10 to 30 minutes per sewing item.

However, it’s important to consider that each project is different and can bring its own set of challenges.

7. Benefits of Sewing Without a Bobbin

Here are some benefits that it offers:

This actually saves a lot of your time and effort. You don’t need to stop and change bobbins frequently during your sewing project.

A sewing machine without a bobbin is very easy to use. You don’t need to deal with unnecessary tools and accessories to use these types of sewing machines.

All you need to do is practice. The more you practice, the better your sewing skill will become.

Closing Thoughts

Many people believe that sewing without a bobbin in a conventional sewing machine is not possible. However, it is not true at all.

You can sew without a bobbin in a conventional sewing machine with the steps mentioned above. Also, there are many specialized sewing machines like sergers, overlockers, chain stitch machines, available in the market which don’t have a bobbin installed.

Remember, when sewing without a bobbin, you won’t have the typical bottom thread, but instead, you’ll rely solely on the top thread for your stitches. Adjusting the bobbin thread tension won’t be necessary in this case, as there’s no bobbin involved.

If there is something I usually dread when sewing, it is dealing with the bobbin. After all, it is too much work, and the time I spend working on it is substantial. The good news is that I can change that by sewing without a bobbin. It might come at a cost, but that’s fine by me.
