This is one issue that every outdoor lover has to face in summer is the unappealing stretching of their apparels, but the garment part that gets the most affected is the swimsuit bottoms. And it is true even for the newly bright ones.

Sure, there are some reasons behind it, namely; harsh sunlight, chlorine exposures or a little company negligence that affect the quality. but it does not change the inconvenience that was created for you.

All in all, If your swimsuit bottoms are too big, it can easily lead to discomfort and insecurity while at the beach or by the pool.

Luckily, there are some methods to make swimsuit bottoms smaller without sewing.

This piece explores those special non-sewing techniques and methods that will help you alter swimsuit bottoms, ultimately ensuring a perfect fit.

Interested? Let’s begin..

 1. The culprits you should consider

Alright, Let’s go over the some culprits you need that you should be wary of, going forward.

1.1 Sun Exposure

First culprit is the sun itself, Sun exposure is one of the most common culprits behind stretching.  This is mainly due to Ultraviolet (UV) rays can weaken the elasticity of the fabric. Which in turn leads

to a loss of shape and color fading.

1.2 Chlorine Exposure

The second culprit behind it is the amount of chlorine you encounter while wearing your swimsuit.

This reason this chemical is in the water in the first place, is to ensure the quality for the water quality, However, it can be an unintentional side effect of ruining the structure quality of swimsuit materials.

It will weaken the fabric and lead to stretching, fading, and degradation.

1.3 Over-Ironing

The third culprit is actually over ironing.

If you are using a polyester swimsuit. Then you might know that it can be sensitive to high heat.

Which in turn can lead to color fading and damage to the fabric and the next thing you know the bottom of your swimsuit stretched out.

But why would anyone iron a swimsuit in the first place? Well simply it is only to remove the wrinkles that appear after a long exposure to chlorine chemicals.

The method in itself is not wrong however, If you need to remove wrinkles, you always wanna make sure that you are doing ironing on a low-heat setting on your iron or consider steaming as an alternative.

1.4. Over-Washing

Fourth and final reason is actually caring too much about cleanliness with your swimsuits.

Particular if you are someone using a nylon swimsuit. Then you should it is actually pretty sensitive to frequent washing which often can lead to stretching.

The only rule you can follow that will benefit you is you wash your swimsuit only when necessary, Basically only after it direct exposure to chlorine, saltwater, or sunscreen, not before that.

2. Quick Fixes for Ill-Fitting Swimsuit Bottoms

Alright, now that you know what is the culprit and finally time to go over some fixes to help. We’ll begin with some quick solution to save you time and then focus on a more permanent solution you can utilize.

2.1 Knotting the Side Ties

First and foremost method or fix you can try out is using knots to you advantage.

The way to do this is first, you gather excess fabric on the side and then tie knots on the inside of the ties. It can be a little tricky and might need future adjustments, but it will get the job done.

Also, since this method reduces the width it is also great for ensuring a more snugger fit without relying on any sewing.

2.2 Folding and Securing with Clips

Then comes clips methods.

For this little trick, you wanna begin by folding the waistband or leg openings inward and you wanna use fabric-friendly clips or safety pins to hold the folds in place. It will temporarily adjust the size.

It is great for tucking excess fabric neatly which in turn helps you lower the overall discomfort. Though remember it is more of a situation based solution if you have any time then you should instead choose  the other methods.

2.3 Using Adhesive Tapes

Third one is all about using adhesive tapes instead of clips.

First and foremost use the double-sided fashion tapes or just standard fabric tapes if you are short on time and adjust the size of swimsuit bottoms.

All in all, the purpose it serves is by attaching the tapes on the inside of the fabric that holds the edges together it will create a tighter fit for regardless of any issue.

Also, this is easier to adjust and reapply.

2.4 Wearing a Swim Bottom Liner

Then comes the liner methods. A tight-fitting swim short or swim bottom liner can be worn underneath swimsuit bottoms. This will certainly help get that additional compression done with your own body weight while holding the fabric in place..

Though it makes you look a little bigger at the back, so only go with it if you are ready for a little bit extra attention.

3. General to maintain swimsuits from stretching any further

By now, hopefully your swimsuit is doing better. From here on out you just need to take care of two things. These 2 will help you prevent any further damage to your swimsuit

3.1 Always Air Dry

Air-drying is the best way to maintain the shape of your swimsuit.

We often don’t have time to properly wash and dry the swimsuit So, most end up just throwing it in a dryer.. However, that is pretty bad if you are using a Nylon swimsuit.

The reason behind it is that it simply tends to regain its original shape when air-dried, rather than being exposed to heat from a dryer.

3.2 Soft washing

The second rule is even simpler! From here on out you will only hand-wash your swimsuit.

Especially, if you are using a nylon swimsuit. The water you use should be cold and you need to apply a quality mild detergent product on it..

Always avoid using harsh detergents and scrubbing too much, as this can affect the fabric’s elasticity once it dries and tries to regain its shape.

Closing Thoughts

Hopefully, you get some value out of this piece. All in all, the main thing to remember is that swimsuits are totally different from any typical wardrobe you have. Thus, it needs different considerations and different rules to maintain its quality and longevity.
