How To Sew Polyester Fabric While Prevent Puckering? A Detail Guide

Want to sew on polyester fabric but don’t know? Then don’t worry, we have got you covered. We will discuss the sewing processing of polyester in this blog. 

But before explaining the sewing process, let us uncover the basics first. Polyester is a versatile synthetic fabric that has earned its place as one of the most widely used materials in the fashion industry.

Despite polyester fabric being popular with individuals, many people still work with it difficult. But, this is not true at all. With little guidance and effort you can easily sew on this cloth. 

Understanding Polyester Fabric

Polyester is a short form of  polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a man-made synthetic fabric that was invented in 1941 by British chemists. Due to its affordability and durability, it has gained popularity in the fashion industry. 

It is also known for its moist resistance and  ability to retain its shape over time.

1. Sewing Polyester Through Sewing Machine

Here is how you can sew on polyester fabric through sewing machine:

1.1 Stitch Length: First of all, you wanna begin by setting your machine stitch length. What you are aiming for is  between 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm for best results.

1.2. Foot Pressure: Next coms the overall foot pressure. Here you wanna begin adjust your sewing machine foot properly to prevent fabric pulling.

1.3 Tension Settings: You need to set the machine upper tension around 4. Also, don’t forget to test on scrap fabric if needed.

1.4. Needle Choice: Okay moving on to the choosing the right needles based on your polyester’s weight and structure. We recommend using 70/10 and 80/12 sharps needles, they work best with polyester fabric. 

1.5. Consider the Fabric Blend: Before starting sewing, check your fabric composition as polyester fabrics often come in blends. If you are working with 100% polyester then consider using polyester thread, whereas for polyester blends consider using stretch needles.

2. Hand Sewing on Polyester Fabric

In case you’re thinking of hand sewing on polyester fabric instead of machine sewing then here is a brief guide:

2.1 Preparation: Start with washing the polyester fabric to remove any coatings. Once you are done with this, you can start the sewing process.

2.2 Needle and Thread: Thread your needle and make sure to use a  high-quality polyester thread for optimal results. 

2.3 Stitches: Last step is all about stitches, you can use zigzag stitches for sewing polyester. They work best on polyester fabric. 

3. Additional Tips: 

Here are some tips that can help you out in sewing polyester:

3.1 Wash Before Use

First and foremost you always wash you polyester before using. Why? well, simply washing polyester before sewing is a must step to remove any coating. Make sure to wash it in cold water and dry on low heat, this helps remove coatings and colorants. This will help prevent potential allergic reactions too. 

3.2 Needle And Thread

Next comes the needle and threads standard you need to follow.

Polyester fabric is hard to work with compare to the other standard fabric. So, you wanna make sure to use appropriate needles for it. Don’t use large holes as it can cause holes in the fabric.

When it comes to needles the best size is 8 needles are best for polyester fabric. For best results, use zigzag stitches. Also, make sure that your sewing machine foot pressure is set as low as possible.

Similarly, you also imperative you wanna go with the right thread. As you already know, it is an important component of sewing that’s why make sure to choose a thread that matches the elasticity of the fabric. Luckily there already very quality polyester thread that are specific created to get you more control and better finish on the polyester fabric. 

Also, don’t forget to iron your outfit after sewing. This will give your outfit a clean and professional finish. 

4. How To Sew Polyester Fabric While Prevent Puckering? 

Here are some tips that can help you avoid Puckering in polyester fabric:

All in all, many folks believe that sewing on polyester fabric is a difficult task. However, with little guidance and skills you can easily sew on polyester fabric easily. 

Once last thing. You wanna keep in mind unlike other fabric, you won’t able to get quality result if you don’t experience of handing the polyester fabric. So, remember you don’t wanna start directly on polyester. Instead you can start practice on scraps to understand which needles and threads work best.
