An Easy Guide On How To Sew Sunbrella Fabric

Want to sew on sunbrella fabric but don’t know how? Then worry not, we have got you covered. In this blog, we will explain how you can sew on sunbrella fabric. 

But, before diving into sewing, let us first cover the basics of how to sew sunbrella fabric like a pro. This fabric has got recognition due to its versatility and durability and has been crafted from 100% solution-dyed acrylic. 

What sets it apart is something called the Color to the Core™ technology, In it the pigments are saturated through the fibers before being spun into yarn. This ensures that the color remains vibrant over time.

1. How to sew Sunbrella fabric?

1.1 Basic Thing To keep in mind for sewing with Sunbrella Fabric

First and foremost you wanna get the basic necessity out of the way.

And it begins with selecting the right sunbrella fabric as it offers various collections, each created for specific purposes.

Here’s a simple example, let’s say, you are looking for something for your boat covers then bimini tops marine and shade fabrics are the best ones to go with, whereas Sunbrella fabric offers lighter weaves for creating comfortable indoor spaces.

Next comes the specifications. As you already know now, Sunbrella fabric comes in different varieties. The majority of sunbrella fabric comes in 54-inch width, which is a standard size. However, there are also various sizes such as 60-inch to 80-inch widths available in the market.

Once you’ve selected your fabric, it’s time to cut the fabric. You can use scissors or a rotary cutter for it. Make sure to cut it properly. After that, just move on to the sewing process.

2. Things to consider while stitching

Alright! now let’s get into the things you should keep in mind to get the proper results. There are particular two ones that require the most consideration.

2.1 Getting and Right Needle

  • Sewing with Sunbrella Upholstery Fabric: For sewing on Sunbrella fabric, you can use size 16 and 18 needles. Also, make sure to use matching sewing thread. 
  • Sewing with Sunbrella Horizon Marine Vinyl: For Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl, a size 18 needle is best. You can use nylon matching color thread with it. 
  • Sewing with Sunbrella Marine and Shade: Use a size 18 needle with polythread to sew on this type of fabric. 

2.2 Stitch Length

Alright, now on the second most important thing the overall stich length you need to keep in mind. 

The overall stitch length, Selecting the right stitch length is important for proper stitching. For example, the longest stitch length of regular home sewing  is around 4 millimeters.

Whereas in heavy duty machines, the stitch length can range up to 8 to 10 millimeters. We recommend using long stitches, they work best on these kinds of fabric.

4. Additional Sewing Tips

4.1 Practice Stitches: For a seamless closure, you need to use straight stitches on fabric. That’s why making sure to practice on a scrap fabric before attempting it on your cover.

4.2 Avoid excessive backstitching: If you have some experience with the art of sewing project like this you might believe that it requires excessive backstitching to give it a proper structure, however that not true at all. In fact, You should avoid backstitching at least excessive usage of it, simply for the reason that it can weaken the fabric.

All in all, many folks believe that sewing on Sunbrella fabric is a difficult task that requires professional help. However, this is not true at all, as you seen the content above.

On top of that there are many additional things you can utilize to achieving those stylize finished edges for that  polished and vibing look.

When sewing Sunbrella fabrics, all you have to do is to that you are using a sewing machine with a walking foot attached. This ensures that home sewing machines can handle the task effectively.
