Sewing is an aspect of the world in which numerous things can shock you, but we didn’t envision this one. Someone out there decided that her turtle is not just an ordinary pet, but an epitome of fashion and to be fair, we support it completely. In a viral video, a rather model behaviour (and extremely regal) turtle dons a shell cover, which doesn’t look too shabby either, and is made of fashion fabric, perfect for a Parisian runway—turtle fashion week, if there ever was one.

The Shell-ebrity Moment
Kardashians, step aside. There’s a new drama queen in town, and it’s a turtle decked in what one can only call reptilian catwalk fashion. This particular shell cover is not only protective it is pretty—I would call it ornate, sparkly, and the most insane thing I have ever seen a turtle wear since… well, always.
Let’s break this down, the black outer cover is soaked in beads and sequins that are lighted up and sparkling just like a disco ball at an 80s night club. And this turtle, in particular, is working it and acts like she knows she is the most important role in that play. To be honest, it may even hire one such as pretty soon.
But…Why?
Good question! Why is there any need for a turtle to be inside another turtle’s shell? The answer, of course, is simple: because he or she is able to. Also, why not sew it. If one must sew it, a turtle can wear it. As a matter of fact, maybe turtles are ahead of their time in fashion and we never knew we needed them. And, let’s be honest, when your pet’s shell can be used as its own mini stage for sequins, who wouldn’t want to try that out?
Lighten it up.
Style Points: Sure, a turtle isn’t bothered about any trends but it sure does look like the imagination of a turtle is ready for a reptile fashion show. “Who wore it best?” – Do you want me to just say the name of your turtle?
Icebreaker: Let’s face it – when people come to your place and you entertain them, very few if any are going to notice your new throw pillows or that decorator lamp you just purchased at a discount. But your sequined turtle. Now that is a conversation I would throw out during a dinner party and make everything interesting.
Sewing Challenge Level: You are a pro: Forget about plain pillow cases and tote bags. Shiftings costumes are the next win. This is fashion to the masons which is for real labour and it is not for the faint hearted.
Creating a Turtle Fashion Statement: Tips and Tricks
If you have a vision of the turtle imaging itself in a custom prepared shell outfit then here are some tips for making your own turtle wear:
Light-weight: Your turtle already has it hard enough carrying the inner parts of the shell, therefore there’s a size and weight limitation. Something like satin, or perhaps a bit of velvet along with a lot of nothing in which your turtle could consider himself/heavyweight pumping up.
Let Me Tell You: Melanie has designed a special vest for penetrable thermoplastic insert which comes out in soft fabric cord. There are stick-on pads so the bra can be worn easily.
Convenience Didn’t Come This Way: When using velcro straps making a wardrobe will not be a problem specially if your turtle has had his fashion quota and is in the preparation stage for hibernation. (Plainly put, sleeping is a talent some turtles have perfected.)
Skin it with all the bling: Adorn them as much as possible. Sequins, beads, rhinestones: this is the stage to cover the shell of the turtledom not only in beads but in crystals as well. Because why not, when the occupational incorporation of a cover can amount to a highly exaggerated mesh cover, it ought to.
Is Turtle Fashion the Next Big Thing?
This probably won’t happen after all, who is interested? Once in a while, sewing, and any kind of stitching really can just be about the fun, and this project fulfills that requirement in the most outrageously effective way possible. Sure, your turtle is not in need of a shell cover, but really does any animal ever actually have to be clothed? No. Do they look good in small clothes? Yes, cute ones.
So, do you have it in you to be a turtle stylist? And as with all things sewing, where there are no rules- only fabric, thread and a sometimes confused animal bedecked with sequins and wondering how this happened to them.
