Do Sewing Patterns Include Seam Allowance?

If we talk about the most important component in the art of sewing that can help a beginner that his/her design of the ground it is no doubt the sewing patterns. Not only they lay foundation of any sewing project, even for veteran’s, they also guiding us through the process of creating beautiful garments adding ornaments to them

However, one aspect of sewing patterns that often causes confusion is seam allowance. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the world of sewing patterns and explore the question: Do sewing patterns include seam allowance?

So let’s begin! 

1. Understanding Seam Allowance

Alright, before we start let go over what seam allowance is and why it is important? so we all can be on the same page. 

Seam allowance is actually the extra space that is left around the stitching lines (at raw edges) of fabric.  It is very important and determines how far in from the cut raw edge you’ll be sewing seam on your outfits. 

Don’t confuse it with a technical detail, it is much more than that, it affects the overall shape of your outfit.

Also, remember that seam allowances can vary, it actually depends on your project. If you end up added the wrong seam allowance then it can result in making your garment too big or too small. That’s why it’s important to add a perfect seam allowance that matches your outfit.

2. Standard Seam Allowances

Okay, moving on the seam allowances you need aim for. If you go by the standard, for outfit seam the common range is 12-15mm, while in quilting the seam allowances is 6mm.  So, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation where you don’t know the size of seam allowance then go for it.

3. Do All Patterns Include Seam Allowance? 

Okay, now that you have understood the basics, let’s get into the core of the story and answer this question; do all patterns include seam allowance? Well, it actually depends on the pattern designer.

For example:

European designers are known for frequently not including seam allowances in their dress that’s why sewers often have to add them manually. 

Whereas in some other countries adding seam allowance is common. That’s why to avoid any  surprises, it’s important to check the pattern instructions for details on seam allowances before you begin your project.

4. Hacks for Adding Seam Allowances 

4.1.Using Pencils

Let’s start with simple hack of using a pencils. It’s an easy hack, you just need two pencils and a rubber band. Here’s how you can use it:

You just need to join the two pencils together with the help of a rubber band. This will help you mark perfect seam allowance.

4.2. Sewing Plates Markings 

Create markings on sewing plates will help align your fabric edges, when it comes to getting the appropriate seam allowance guides. These markings will also help you in maintaining a consistent seam width throughout the sewing process.

Closing Thoughts

All in all, many folks believe that properly adding seam allowance is not important for achieving good details. However, seam allowance gives your dress a finished look that’s why it’s important to add them. 

But remember that it can vary depending on the designer and pattern company. So, whether you’re sewing outfits or quilts, getting the seam allowance right is an important step.
