How To Sew A Sweatshirt? Beginners Guide

Tired of the same old sweatshirt? Then make a new one! It might sound complex, but it’s not. And you don’t have to be a fashion designer. We’ll give you an easy guide on how to sew a sweatshirt on your own in just 5 steps.

So let’s begin!

1. Tools and Materials Needed

Ladies, before we explain the sewing process of bag you need to gather the tools and materials mentioned below:

1.1. Fabric

You will need to choose a fabric of your choice. We recommend choosing French terry, for a cotton-polyester blend, they are best and works well for this purpose.

1.2. Ribbing Fabric

Another thing you will need is ribbing fabric. It will be used for the collar, and waistband that’s why make sure to select a ribbing fabric that compliments your main fabric.

1.3. Pattern

Select a pattern that you want to be on your sweatshirt. There are many commercial patterns available online that you can take inspiration from or you can draft one on your own.

1.4. Thread

Select a matching thread that complements the color of your chosen fabric.

1.5. Sewing Machine

You will need a sewing machine too. As sewing by hand will take more time and effort.

1.6. Scissors, Pins, and Measuring Tape

They are essential tools in every sewing project.

2. The Step By Step

Alright ladies, now that you have gathered the tools and materials mentioned above, it’s time to get to the story; How to sew a sweatshirt?

2.1. Step 1. Preparing the pattern

In the first step you need to finalize the pattern properly. If you are thinking of using a commercial pattern then make sure to cut the pattern as stated in the instruction manual.

In case, you are making a pattern on your own then take accurate measurements of your body. This step ensures proper fitting of the sweatshirt.

2.2. Step 2. Fabric Cutting

In the second step you need to start cutting process. Here is how you need to do it:

Start by placing fabric and pattern piece you have chosen on flat surface. After that use pins to secure pattern pieces and cut out front, sleeves and back of your sweatshirt.

2.3. Step 3. Assemble Body

Now let’s move onto third step. In this step you need to assemble fabric pieces together.

Once done with this, start sewing process from the front to back pieces at shoulder seams. Incase your sweatshirt has side seams then sew them too. Make sure to use stretch and zigzag stitches, they are ideal for a sweatshirt.

2.4. Step 4. Attaching Sleeves

In fourth step, attach sleeves to body of your sweatshirt. Make sure to match notches and sew sleeves in place properly.

Once done with this move onto creating neckline part of your sweatshirt. If your sweatshirt has traditional crew neck then you need to attach ribbing fabric to neckline. Before sewing make sure measure neck line for proper fitting.

2.5. Step 5: Adding Cuffs and Waistband

In fifth step add cuffs and waistband to your made sweatshirt. This step will give professional look of your sweatshirt. Here is how:

To add cuff and waistband you need measure wrist and hips circumference determine length needed. Once done with this, attach ribbing to sleeve ends and bottom of sweatshirt.

2.6. Step 6: Adding finishing touches

In the last step you need to add finishing touches to your bag. You can add pockets or embellishments to add your personal touch to the bag you’ve created.

Congratulations ladies! With this, you’ve successfully sewn a hood on your own without anyone’s help.

    How do people sew these sweatshirts and how much time and effort do they put into it? Those have been some of my concerns every time I wore one. However, this blog solves all of those concerns. The icing on the cake is that I can now sew a sweatshirt.
