How To Sew Marine Vinyl: Everything You Need To Know

Thinking of sewing marine vinyl on your own but don’t know the process? Then don’t worry, we have got you covered. In this blog, we will explain the process of sewing marine vinyl. 

But before diving into the sewing process, let us first uncover the basics of marine vinyl first. Marine vinyl is a robust and water resistant material that is created to withstand the harsh conditions of marine environments.  It is often used for boat upholstery.

1. Tools and Material Needed

Ladies, before we explain the sewing process you need to gather the tools and materials mentioned below:

  1. Marine Vinyl
  2. Heavy-Duty Needles
  3. Matching Thread
  4. Fabric Clips
  5. Heavy-Duty Sewing Machine
  6. Roller Foot
  7. Rotary Cutter or Scissors
  8. Seam Ripper

2. How To Sew Marine Vinyl Like a Pro

Alright ladies, now that you have gathered the tools, it’s time to met the story; How to sew marine vinyl? Marine vinyl requires special techniques to ensure a professional finish and long lasting results. Here are the some steps that you need to follow:

2.1 Preparation

First of all, you need to set up your sewing machine. Make sure to choose a matching thread for sewing. Once you are done with this, adjust the stitch length based on your project requirement.

2.2 Practice

Marine vinyl material is specifically designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the marine environment. This material is difficult to work with, that’s why it will be better for you to practice on a scrap fabric. 

2.3 Stitching 

Use pins to secure the fabric to the position you want.  After that, start the stitching process.  Also, make sure to leave ¼ seam allowances. 

2.4. Securing Seams

Now, use backstitches at the beginning and the end of each seam to secure the stitches you’ve created. Once you are done with this, use a seam ripper to trim out excess fabric. 

Also, don’t forget to iron your outfit for a clean finish. 

Congratulations! with this, you’ve successfully sewn on marine vinyl. 

3. Additional Tips:

Here are some additional tips that will help you out in the sewing process: 

Comparing Marine Vinyl & Standard Vinyl

3.1 Practice

The more you practice, the better your sewing skill will become. That’s why all you need to do is practice. For a seamless closure, you need to use straight stitches on scrap fabric. That’s why make sure to practice on a scrap fabric before attempting it on the fur directly. 

You can use different stitches like zigzag and backstitch to give additional security to your seam. 

3.2 Use a Walking Foot

Marine vinyl fabric is hard to work with, that’s why if possible use a walking foot on your sewing machine. This step will ensure seamless stitching. 

3.3 Consider Topstitching

Don’t forget to add Topstitching to your marine vinyl project. This will enhance the overall look of your project. Additional security will be added to your seam too.
