Quilting without the right tools? Been there done that and trust me it is not pretty. It is like trying to whip up a batch of cookies without measuring cups Sure you might manage but it is bound to be a mess. Which is why I have a good embroidery notion kit. It is like having a toolbox that has every kind of reach to make a simple set of fabric into something great.
As the years go by I have come to understand that the right tools do more than make the work easier, they make it enjoyable and fun. I share the love and I try to avoid ruining a crafted piece, so here is a list of some of the items that are essential for a quilter, that embarrassed myself. Let us jump in!

Quilt Passions: How To Embroider Quilting Threads at Work
I am a thread snob, to be honest and as embarrassing as it sounds it is true. I turned to DMC floss after one to many spools breaking and nay stitches turning out perfectly alright and I have not looked back ever since. It is perfect for intricate detailing and even, bold and colorful patterns. I keep a stash of six strand cotton for hand embroidery and Perle cotton in case any of the stitches require a more vibrant look.
My Tip: I love incorporating elements from Hawaiian patterns and Hawaiian fabrics in my work since I find the shades of the ocean and hibiscus flowers the most enticing. However, I always make sure to test my threads on a piece of fabric before using it as this has saved me from a great deal of backlash in the past.
Getting Started with Quilting
Embarking on your quilting journey can be both exciting and a tad overwhelming. But fear not! With the right guidance and tools, you’ll be stitching up beautiful creations in no time.
2. Needles That Unlock The Ease Of The Fun
Embarking On A Journey For The Right Needle
Needles can be a pain, much like looking for a good pair of jeans, making the search more painful than it actually is. I’ve been there and done that with hand quilting embroidery needles which are very effective but with the right tools. Tapestry needles that work prevent fabric from ripping and the mechanical ones are just alright too.
My experience can be very useful to those who are having trouble with needles, dull ones will always prove to be unhelpful, wherestrong ones make life easy. My needles replacement cycle is from 8 to 10 hours, every 8 to 10 stitches. For beginners who want to try quilting without investing in a machine, many workshops offer loaner sewing machines at no charge.
My Favorite Hack: It can be difficult to manage liters and needles, which is why I carry a small plated needle case around with me. This also comes in handy because it reduces the need of diving into irrelevant drawers.
3. Hoops and Frames: My Secret Weapon
How The Size Of A Hoop Influenced My Work
Let’s go over hoops for a moment. When the embroidery requires some small detail work, I embroider using a 4-inch hoop. This works well as a support hoop. However, I require a 14-inch frame for more extensive areas such as quilt pieces. Having a little variety always makes a difference in the output. Local designers often create unique patterns that influence the choice of hoop size.

Plastic vs Wood: I do love the lightness and strength of plastic hoops, but nothing beats the classic feel that wooden ones give. It all honestly just depends on my mood and what I choose to use.4. Markers: While stitching Markers certainly prefer to get the job done without steaming these lines.
Marking Patterns Did You Say? Patterns
Yes, Yes, Yes; there is a perfect pen that I blanked out on all about marking a pattern. I can blame the water soluble pens and hera markers. Pens are for finer details and hera marking pens do just what I said- create lines without the blunt end effects pfft (As if it couldn’t get cooler).
White chalk pencils and Silver gel pens become my best friends when it comes to marking on dark pieces of fabric as they become the best marker and vanish into thin air once the design is complete. Accurate marking is especially crucial for intricate designs like Hawaiian themed quilts, which reflect the culture and history of Hawaii.
Pro-Tip: Every struggling creative needs a solution to it all, my lightbox helped me with tracing Hawaiian motifs and now it is a miracle tool for me.
Storage and Organization: Embroidery Notions
Because some people love to stay messy and dont understand how chaos ruins everything, trying to reorganize everything would be one of the hardest challenges designed specifically for me.
My Storage Secrets If you were to pop by my house and my quilting station seems to be out of order i will not be able to think let alone create something artistic. That’s why I make it a point to keep everything in its place otherwise it adds to the chaos, A neat rack for my thread, cases for my needles, and little boxes to keep the scattered tools. Everything is in its place and allows me to think clearly instead of searching for a needle. Notions kits are also a great way to keep all necessary tools organized.
What I Learned the Hard Way: Despite the consequences of doing it, I recommend putting your fabrics in a padded storage to avoid any deterioration respectively and your threads safely tucked away from the sunlight. I once did the mistake of leaving a spool in the sun and guess what? The color lost its intensity faster than my excitement about a fabric sale.
6. Ready-made kits: A step in the right direction.
My Kit Recommendations.
When I started quilting, I did not want the hassle of scouting for every single piece of tool, so I simply bought a kit. Some of those I prefer the most are:
Superbloom Quilting Kit: Perfect all the needed items for I including vibrate threads, needles, hoops and even marking pens.

Island Vibes Embroidery Kit: Hawaiian design will do the tropical colored threads and the tools included in the kit will easily allow transfer of the motif.
How I Customize: Customizing a little has always been my favorite as I then get a few extra threads in my favorite colors along with some specialty needles, like a self-curated kit.
For those who prefer not to make their own, ready-made Hawaiian quilts are an excellent option to incorporate authentic Hawaiian aesthetics into their homes.
