3. How To Sew Triangles To A Square: Step-by-Step

Now that you’ve prepared your materials and workspace, let’s delve into the step-by-step process of sewing triangles to a square, focusing on the Half-Square Triangle (HST) method as an example:

3.2 Marking Diagonal Line

On the wrong side of one square, use a fabric-safe marking tool to draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner.

3.3 Matching Squares

Place the marked square on the right side together with the second square. Align edges carefully.

3.4 Sewing Along the Diagonal:

Sew a 1/4″ seam on both sides of the marked diagonal line, creating two parallel seams.

3.5 Cutting and Pressing

Cut along the marked line to separate the squares into two HSTs. Press the seams open, setting the seam allowance toward the darker fabric.

3.6 Squaring Up

Use a square-up ruler to trim the HSTs to the desired size. Trim the right and top sides first, then rotate the HST and trim the left and bottom sides.

3.7 Repeat for More Blocks

Repeat these steps to create additional HSTs, experimenting with different fabric combinations and colors.
